Mirror-Gloss Patent Leather Topcoating: The Perfect Choice for a True “Lacquer” Look|Technical Control High-Gloss Leather Finishing Resin

In the world of handbags and footwear, patent leather has long represented an ultimate expression of refined aesthetics. Its high-gloss, crystal-clear, mirror-like appearance instantly captures attention and defines the perceived quality level of a product.

However, achieving an ideal lacquer-style effect on leather is technically challenging. The coating must deliver exceptional gloss, a smooth and premium hand feel, excellent flex resistance, and outstanding weather resistance while maintaining long-lasting appearance. Bringing all these properties together within a single, ultra-thin topcoat layer has long been a major technical challenge in the leather finishing process.

High Gloss and Silky-Smooth Hand feel, Designed Specifically for Patent Leather Topcoats

Technical Control PU 651 is an anionic aliphatic waterborne polyurethane dispersion developed specifically for high-demand patent leather high-gloss topcoat applications. With its comprehensive performance in gloss presentation, film-forming properties, and process compatibility, it provides a solid technical foundation for formulation development.

Clear, high-gloss appearance: After curing, the film delivers strong gloss and excellent transparency. The coating remains clear and crystal-like, without whitening or haze.

Smooth, premium hand feel: The cured film provides a sleek, smooth and silky touch with excellent non-tacky performance. No additional hand feel additives are required to achieve the tactile quality demanded by patent leather products.

Excellent weather resistance: Based on an aliphatic polyurethane system, PU 651 offers superior UV resistance and oxidation resistance compared with traditional aromatic systems. It maintains excellent appearance and performance stability under long-term use conditions.

High tensile strength and low-temperature flex resistance: The coating combines excellent cohesive strength with good flexibility. Even after repeated bending under low-temperature conditions, the coating remains intact without cracking or peeling, meeting the durability requirements of footwear and handbags in daily use.

Excellent Process Compatibility: Compatible with Both Spray Coating and Roller Coating Processes

In leather finishing applications, spray coating and roller coating are two of the most widely used application methods. Technical Control PU 651 demonstrates excellent process adaptability in terms of leveling performance, viscosity stability, and adhesion.

Spray Coating

Spray coating is a commonly used method for achieving efficient and uniform coverage in patent leather topcoating applications. PU 651 demonstrates excellent performance in this process through three key aspects:

Fine and uniform atomization: PU 651 exhibits stable spray output and excellent atomization performance, enabling the formation of a continuous and smooth wet film while reducing surface defects such as orange peel and cratering caused by uneven atomization.

Low sag tendency: Appropriate viscosity and rheological properties enable the coating to resist sagging on vertical surfaces, ensuring uniform film build.

Moderate surface drying time: Provides sufficient leveling time for the coating while maintaining production efficiency, achieving an ideal balance between coating quality and productivity.

Roller Coating

Roller coating is widely adopted in high-volume production due to its high efficiency and consistent coating output. PU 651 also delivers reliable performance in this process:

Stable transfer and uniform film build: Consistent resin transfer between rollers ensures uniform coating application, reducing gloss variation and color variation caused by build fluctuations.

Less visible roller marks: Excellent leveling allows the coating film to quickly level out after roller coating, reducing residual roller marks and other mechanical surface defects.

Reduced bubble retention: Appropriate defoaming performance and balanced leveling speed allow bubbles to escape sufficiently before the coating dries, ensuring a smooth and glossy coating surface.

Green compliance—supporting sustainable coating applications

Technical Control PU 651 and the complete range of waterborne polyurethane resins for leather finishing applications have obtained ZDHC MRSL Level 3 certification.
